Not Much Water in the Desert

Bill and Jerry's Trail Magic

Night hiking didn't happen. When the alarm went off at 10:30pm, George was much more interested in sleeping. We ended up getting going around 4:45am after a mini breakfast of trail mix. We walked a mile to Bird Spring Pass, and another water cache. We filled up and climbed 2000 feet, and got to watch a gorgeous sunrise from the ridge. We did some more traversing and climbing, hit up another Cookie Monster water cache at Yellow Jacket Spring Road and carried on through a burned zone to McIvers Spring Road. We waked a few miles down to the mediocre spring, where we had our lunch. Craig came through as we were packing up. After chatting for a few minutes, we headed off. We climbed up a small ridge, then descended to Walker Pass. There was a water cache at the campground there. While filling up, we met two trail maintenance volunteers, Bill and Jerry. They had horses and were leaving the next morning to remove some downed trees from the trail. They were awesome - not only were they fixing the trail, they invited us to stay for dinner. They grilled up some burgers and chicken, and there were also baked beans, chips and soda. Yum! After filling up on food (ooh, and chocolate chip cookies!) and hanging out for a few hours, we got back on the trail. The sun was setting as we climbed Mt. Morris. It was unbelievably gorgeous. We camped in a windy saddle at the top.
