Vortex's Tuolumne Meadows Bedroom

a loooooong day

we left Tuolumne Meadows with my mom a little after 7am. it was a beautiful morning for hiking - not too hot, clear blue skies, few other hikers... it was really fun to have my mother along. not only did she provide good conversation, Lego fruit snacks and the opportunity to stop and read interpretive signboards, she even carried my pack for a while! what a treat. she hiked about 2 miles with us toward Glen Aulin, then turned around and headed for the car. we pressed on, past several picturesque cascades, to Glen Aulin High Sierra Camp. it was fun for me to be back there. one of my first backpacking trips was the Yosemite High Sierra loop, and it was interesting to see the tent cabins, bear boxes and waterfalls that I remembered from my early days. after meeting our first ranger and getting our permit checked, we hiked on through Cold Canyon. from there, the trail went down and up and down and up, in and out of canyons. it was not so fun - the switchbacks were steep, rocky and numerous, and I had regrettably left my trekking poles at home! We stopped for a short break at Miller Lake, a beautiful lake recommended to us by my Aunt Catherine. there were a lot of mosquitoes there unfortunately, so we didn't stay as long as we would have liked. We ran into Stick and Wing It as we were heading down into Matterhorn Canyon. The four of us ended up camping together just on the far side of the ford.

It sounds like George is thinking about leaving the trail at the Cabin. I'm not sure yet how I feel about this, but it seems pretty clear that he's not happy being so isolated out here and really is ready to go home.
