Yosemite National Park
Getting to the Trail (Updated)
Woke up at 3:00 a.m. and showered in my own shower for the last time for a few months. Jamie drove me to the airport & I couldn't believe the line to check-in at 4:00 a.m. Delayed in Phoenix for a bit, but I had to wait for my bus in Reno so it wasn't a big deal Met up with a climber waiting for the bus to Yosemite NP and we had lunch when the bus stopped at the Golden Nugget Casino in Carson City, NV. It was like going back into the 70's wth the way the casino was decorarated and was operated. Lunch was good, but afterwards I waited outside for the bus to leave north for the road to Yosemite. This was the only form of public transporation to get back to the trail and would let me off in Lee Vining. I still had to manage a ride somehow into the park to Tolumne MeadowsI got off the bus in Lee Vining and tried to buy some stove fuel, because I couldn't take it on the plane. No sooner when I started waiving at the cars, I got a ride all the way to Toulmne Meadows - 26 miles (Elevation ~8600 feet). Sweet Deal! The driver was coming back from getting a quote on getting his car brakes fixed. Thankfully we are going up hill and didn't need the brakes much. He was a young man and I believe it was he it was his first time working for the National Park Service during his summer brake from college. He dropped us off at the make shift tent store at Toulmne Meadows and wouldn't take any gas money. I was able to buy stove fuel there, thankfully.
The road to Tolumne Meadows in Yosemite National Park had only opened a few weeks and tonight was the first night the backcamper's site was open. Things just seemed to be going well. I met Sean (who I'd hitched in with), Just Ben and a few other thru-hikers that night. I was pretty tired from traveling, and after enjoying a beer with the other hikers, I went to bed shortly after dark.
