Minor Crest Saddle to Lakelet to Summit Lake Campground

We awoke the next morning cold to blue skies and a tent interior soaked to the point of dripping on our new down bags. This was the last night that we would spend with doors shut against the cold and the bugs. It became clear that although we made various efforts to create airflow over the next week, our new single wall, lightweight tent was seriously inadequate to meet the challenge. This was a huge disappointment, because this tent had lightened Kerry’s load by more than six pounds. We dried everything out as best we could before packing up and starting out toward Summit Lake.

We had begun to fall into an easy routine at both ends of the day—I was responsible for food and Kerry did the camp. We would walk for long periods in silence aware only of the intensity of the sky, the trees, the mountains and the occasional body of water, and all to the sound of our falling footsteps on the changing earth surface. It was hard work, and yet it had its own kind of peace.
