Pacific Crest Trail Map

CA-8 Echo Lake to Donner Pass

We drove two cars up highway 80, leaving one at the Donner Trailhead and driving the other down to Echo Lake at Highway 50, by way of Highway 89 and the side of Lake Tahoe. We wanted to complete the Tuolumne Meadows- Donner stretch this year.

Traffic was fairly heavy leaving the Bay Area and it took us longer to get to our destination than we had hoped. It was too late, in fact, to take the ferry across Echo Lake. It was dark when we arrived; too dark to travel any distance to find a place to sleep, so we found a bit of a meadow just North of the parking area in which we bedded down for the night. Since it was close to the road and civilization and not really a “legal” spot, we didn’t put the tent up. I could tell as we got into the sleeping bags that it was going to be cold, icy cold—and I was right. Friday morning we awakened with ice on the bags! As the summer wears on, days begin to shorten and the light changes but I did not expect it to be quite so cold. Even Cody, who loves the snow, was cold enough that in the morning as we stirred he moved in close for warmth.
