Smoke haze

Day 110: over Kearsarge Pass to Lake 12,248

From the east, Kearsarge Pass was every bit as endearing as I thought it would be the other way until the final crushing climb. In this direction it was a gentle grade on good tread the whole way, for five miles. Following the pass was a long descent into a nice forest. The smoke from the Tahipiti Fire closed in on the canyon as we started climbing slowly up towards Forester after lunch, impeding the craggy mountain views.
The climb up towards Forester Pass was mostly very gradual and under tree cover until well past 11,000 feet. We continued to a lake named only for its elevation at 12,248 feet (our new highest elevation record) and camped there.
I am in the habit of jumping into any body of water we find ourselves at at the end of the day, and went ahead and did so here without due consideration of the effects of altitude on water temperature. It took me three times the usual to redress myself afterwards due to shivering and loss of fine motor function. Luckily by the time I got back up to the tent Dan had a cup of hot tea waiting for me to fend of hypothermia. Phew!
We joined LiLi for dinner by her tent and she kindly let us sit in its doorway to stay warm. We had a nice pasta supper followed by more tea and some scotch to help us to bed.
