Pacific Crest Trail Map

journal 5/7/8

This was a perfect first day. Scout & Frodo dropped 6 of us at the trail. We all did photos and went down around the fence to put our hands thru the wall on the border. We hit the trail around 7:40am.

The temperature only got up to about 82 but it was some kind of hot in the ever present sun. After a while our hiking speeds split us into several groups of 2 or 1. Around 1pm Icebag & I stopped in the shade of at tree near Houser Creek for some lunch. After a bit Josh showed up. He had some knee trouble before starting the trail and had one of those braces that wraps just below the knee cap. Now his other knee was feeling the same way. He had juryrigged a brace for that knee with some duct tape and a stick. He asked if any of us had an ace bandage. I gave him mine. Sure hope it works for him.

Parkbench arrived from the wrong direction walking down a dirt road. He had missed the turn off a dirt road. After a while he realized this was the wrong way but going back up seemed wrong. He had no map so he walked aways and took his 1st left. He probably added 2 bonus miles to his day at least.

Next was the sweltering haul up Mt Houser. My face started feeling like it might burst into flame any minute so I slowed my pace to avoid heat exhaustion. Ice bag passed me but we met up again later along with Wildflower and Danger.

We got to Lake Morena camp ground around 4:30. There was a section hiker named Kirk there. He had read my last year's journal. That made me happy. It wasn't long before Parkbench, Josh and 101 arrived. We got shower. A guy from Germany showed up named Christian. He had made lots of his gear. Pretty cool.

It got cold as soon as the sun went down. We were in our tents by 9, all except Parkbench. He was cowboy camping out under the stars.
