Soda Cache--delicious!

This morning I took off early, leaving the boys asleep still. The trail dropped down to a creek, then climbed to a trailhead at Barker Pass. I met a couple, weekend hiking, and we leap-frogged up & down to the trailhead parking, where they left (after a photo shoot by the trailhead sign). I continued on, after some trail chat with a friendly local sheriff's deputy whose wife hiked in '06, plus a stop at a Team Nasty cache. The soda was unexpected & oh so enthusiastically drunk!

After my long break there, I wasn't really ready for lunch, but I found a really beautiful spot next to a creek in a hanging valley, overlooking a lower very green valley. After lunch, I climbed up a ridge to its crest, then followed the crestline for 4 miles on steep slopes--steep enough to make me feel unexpectedly scared of heights. Although I liked the views, I was still pleased to descend into some trees, followed by a creek where I had dinner. After dinner, I moved on to a valley a few miles up to camp. I was so relieved to see that I had come 20 miles by 6:30 pm. It would have taken me until 9 pm to do 20 miles in the higher parts of the Sierra, and up until now, I didn't feel like I really had the energy to do more than 20 miles/day. It's good to have that back!
