Tom at Donahue Pass 11056 ft.

One Day, Two Passes

A lovely hike today -- we lost several hundred feet of elevation only to have to regain it to get over Island Pass -- not much of a pass, high, but just a saddle. From there we again lost elevation, reaching Rush Creek (a beautiful spot) and then turned around to gain 1500 feet or so to get over Donohue. I was very relieved to find Donohue (11,056)almost snow free -- only 4 or 5 snow patches, no snow fields. I am so tired of churning through snow fields! This pass, although not particularly steep, provided Tom with a "pass experience". We only had to look for the trail a couple of times where the snow had obscured the switchbacks.

Just below the pass at about 10,500, we found a spectacular campsite. A teeny opening between some rocks created a mini valley where I could set up my new tent (a whopping 2 lbs). This site had the oh so important mosquito beating breeze, a lovely view from both ends -a mountain with snow fields on the South, Lyell Valley on the North. A lively stream was within 175 feet and a snow patch within 50. As if that wasn't enough -- we had good bathroom facilities and a resident marmot named Murray.
