Appalachian Trail victory photo from Mt. Katahdin, Maine.

Why hello there!

This spring (if all goes according to plan) I'm going to finish law school. But instead of taking the infamous Bar Exam and catapulting myself straight into my future existence as a real-live-lawyer, I'm going to (if all goes according to plan) head off into the mountains for a few months. I'm hoping to hike 2,650 miles from Mexico to Canada along the Pacific Crest Trail, starting in late April of this year. Which is pretty soon. Exciting. And, at this point, sort of scary, and difficult to imagine.

As is the case with many aspiring PCT thru-hikers, I've wanted to do this ever since finishing a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. I hiked the AT in 2001 during a semester off from my sophomore year of college, under the trail name "Everest," with a wonderful partner named "Survivor." Now it's been 7 years since the start of that hike. I'm older and have more years of expensive education stuffed into my head. But, as always, part of me just wants to be outside.

I've never had a blog or a trail journal before. Nor have I ever even had a private diary that I managed to keep writing in for more than a few months. But nevertheless I'm going to give this thing a shot, at least with the goal of occasionally letting people back home know where I am and what I'm up to, and possibly as a medium for more extensive self-expression, if I happen to get to feeling like extensively self-expressing myself to lots of people over the Internet.

P.S. I don't know what I'm gonna do with my photos from the trail but probably they will go either here: (click) or here: (click) because those are the places where my other pictures from other adventures live. Posting them all on this site seems like it would be a hassle.

P.P.S. In case you are curious (which you probably aren't) my username on here, "flora.aux" is not a trail name, it's just a rearrangement of the letters of my name that I like to use because my name is common enough that myfirstname.mylastname is taken as a username on many websites.
