Pacific Crest Trail Map

Official Start Day

04-21-08 mon
Got up, ate breakfast w/ Melina, said goodbye. Then she took the bus to the hospital in Mexico. I watched a few minutes of monster truck races before I checked out, called Elisabeth, then headed for El Cajon. When I got there I found out I had to wait 5 hours for my bus, so I decided to go see what the nude beach was all about, north of La Jolla. I got within 5 or 6 miles of that beach where I needed to switch buses AGAIN. By then I had to turn around to get back in time for the bus to Campo. No nude beach for me. Lol. But I met a few nice people today (short conversations... no names). Then sat down to wait for the 894 to Campo & met Yukon (builds fountains, lives in Florida) and Glow-worm (from PA) getting on the same bus. We hit it off & hiked to the border to start together around 6 or 7pm. The border is crazy. Helicopters & trucks everywhere, dirt bikes, 4x4s, and citizens that sit like sentries in their trucks just waiting for their chance to protect our borders. Oh yeah, on the way down the bus stopped near the border in another town & we passed a parking lot (near the border patrol office) that was full of empty tractor trailer "containers" that were seized b/c they were full of drugs coming from Mexico. But anyway...

I'm FINALLY on the PCT!! My pack is heavy b/c there's no water for the next 19 miles or so, but right now I'm loving the beautiful stars & cold, desert-like air. It's 9pm. Hiked a mile or so from the start @ the border.

(By the way, those are trail names, not their birth names. They got those names on the A.T. I don't know how they got them, yet. But we've got PLENTY of time to talk while we walk.)
