Pilot Rock

Yond Lei Low Has A Lean and Hungry Look*

Today was nearly a rest day. We had a short walk down to the freeway in the morning. I was meeting Dad at 8:30AM, and I offered Lucky, Milky, and Gadget a ride into town. We got there a bit early...around 7:30AM. Dad was early, too, arriving just before 8AM. He brought a cooler of cold drinks and a package of breakfast rolls for the 10-mile ride into town (Ashland).

We dropped Lucky and Milky off at the Knights Inn near the freeway, then headed downtown to find Gadget's hotel where he's meeting his wife this afternoon. We parked at the hotel and walked a block or two downtown to find a place for breakfast. Gadget insisted on treating for breakfast (thanks!), and we had a nice conversation over a delicious omelet. I took Gadget up on his offer of a shower at his hotel, then headed downtown to do chores.

I did laundry, and I bought a new air mattress (mine had sprung an un-fixable leak near the valve). I got some postcards, then had an early lunch with Dad. I ran into Cliff downtown and he expressed interest in a ride back to the trail. So after a quick 4-hour visit to the largest town on the PCT, I headed back to the trail.

My intention was to stop at the first shady, flat spot and relax for the rest of the day. I spent about an hour at a lovely spot three-quarters of a mile from the road. Boredom and the freeway noise got me moving again. I ended up hiking about 10 miles up to the first good water source, just past the prominent Pilot Rock. As part of my on-trail rest day, I'm going to sleep in tomorrow.
