Over half way

An interesting and challenging day.

I started the day off way early by night hiking out of camp at 4 AM. I was awake and figured I wouldn't go back to sleep so why not hike.

I quickly passed the PCT 1/2 way point while still in the dark. It didn't really get light until about 5:20. I don't really like night hiking as I feel you miss so much because it is dark. Also the batteries were fading on my headlamp and that made things harder.

The sunrise was spectacular as I had a good view of it. Around 7:30 I hit the water source and drank up.

Hiked on past the road to the town of Chester. About 10 AM I noticed that my lower back was bothering me. Felt like a pulled muscle. The back bothered me for the rest of the day being quite painful at times. Not sure if I slept on it wrong or just pulled something. Anyway it made for several miserable hours of hiking. I was attempting to push the miles to get to the Drakesbad Guest Range in mid afternoon. Due to the aching back I was not able to walk fast and didn't arrive until 4:45 PM.

The ranch is typically booked up years in advance but they let PCT thru hikers use some of the facilities and eat there for half price. I took a long hot shower - and boy did I need it. Swam in the hot spring fed pool and then had a fabulous dinner there. It was a truly wonderful experience. I'd love to come spend a week here sometime. Hoping the swim helps my back. It was a little better after resting it a while so hopefully it will be better tomorrow.

Had a interesting encounter with a fawn today. I was walking down the trail when around a corner comes a fawn running full speed down the trail right at me. I got to within about 2 feet of me before it looked up and just veered off just barely missing me. I think it had been scared by a horse and rider just ahead of me (MenloRider and Primo).

Oh yeah I saw an Osprey the day before that I forgot to mention and a few deer today.

For breakfast I had granola and pop tarts. For lunch I had last nights planned dinner of tortellini with pesto sauce. For dinner I had a salad, bread, Roast turkey, squash, green beans, and apple pie - Gotta love the Drakesbad Guest Ranch!

A tough day due to a painful lower back. But even then wonderful dinner and experiences with wildlife.
