Bridge over Paiute Creek

Bridge Wonder

Descended to the South Fork of the San Joaquin River where we crossed over a bridge. Hiked along it for awhile and then crossed it again on another bridge. More hiking down the river valley and then crossed another bridge over Paiute Creek where we officially left Kings Canyon National Forest and entered John Muir Wilderness.

Climbed up 2,000 ft. and had a late lunch next to Sheldon Creek. After taking off his shoes, Gino stubbed his toe and it was bleeding a little. While we ate lunch a big fat ant crawled onto his foot to check it out and have a nibble I guess.

Ascended another 1,200 ft. to Sheldon Pass (10,900 ft.) just past a heart shaped lake. There was virtually no snow and was an easy cross.

Hiked until sunset again and ate dinner in tent to avoid mosquitoes. Everyday it seems we encounter bigger and bigger swarms of mosquitoes. The biggest yet was next to Marie Lake after Sheldon Pass and at the fording of Bear Creek. You don't even have time to roll up your pant legs before they are landing all over your legs. The creek crossing becomes a momentary protection for your legs at least. The pesky bugs also attempt to attack your face and distract you during the creek crossings. Not a good thing when the current is swift!

Pushed hard today and trying to make Vermilion Valley Resort (VVR) tomorrow morning.
