I got up at 6:30am and did my laundry. I was originally planning on zeroing today, but I didn't get as much sleep as I wanted and I suspect that tonight will also be the same. I'll probably sleep better on the trail. Miles and company are plannning on leaving today at noon. I probably won't be ready by then, but hopefully I'll catch up to them. I ate a whole box of Fruit Loop Cereal for breakfast and started packing my stuff up. Around mid-morning, Sean arrived at the hiker-hut with a few other hikers. He had been working on 2 of them for a few days and eventually got them to talk with a pastor from a local church. He is persistent.
I went to town around 1pm and mailed all my stuff out and then checked the museum out. I like old buidlings and antiques so I enjoyed looking around and seeing how the town use to be. I then went to the Deli for lunch since everything else was closed up after 1pm for some reason. I didn't want to walk all the way out to Rob's Ranchhouse and Dotties either. I hit the Soda Fountain yet again for desert and this time tried the Freeze which is made from Sorbet (good stuff). I will miss this place.
I went back to the hiker hut and got my stuff. Since some other hikers claimed that they were going to leave today, I didn't take the 1 ride a day shuttle from the hut to the summit and left it for them and walked back into town with my pack. I tried hitching out around 3pm and it took 40minutes to get a ride. Northern Strider walked up about 5 minutes before I got a ride and waited in the shade of a nearby tree while I did all the work. :D Back up at Etna Summit, we saw Gourmet (an injured hiker who got off the trail) doing trail magic. He was making burgers and offering soda and beer for any hiker that wanted it. Homeless, Not Phil (Not Phil Collins) and PartyFoul were hanging around with no intention of leaving anytime soon. Sean showed up a few minutes latter from Town. He and Norther Strider had a burger while I just had a soda. Gourmet offered out Cigars and as Not Phill was smoking one, we thought he now looks more like Fidel Castro then Phil Collins and declared his new name should be Not Phil-del (as in Not Fidel Castro).
I left the summit around 4:40pm and Northern Strider eventually overtook me. Around 8:40, we arrived at Shelly Meadows and found Shadow, Monologue and Miles camped. I set up nearby and we hung out at the fire Shadow built.
A Walk North On The PCT - 2009
One small step for man, but I'll walk even farther for a burger.
