It’s my turn! I am going to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. That’s 2650 miles from Mexico to Canada. For about 5 years, I’ve been reading PCT journals… always with a twinge of envy. I finally have the time to do it. Yippee!
In January I retired from dentistry without a clear idea of exactly what I was going to do with the next phase of my life. I knew I wanted to be outside after having spent all my working hours indoors. I also knew I wanted more adventure in my life. Since I have never backpacked more than 5 or 6 days in a row my original plan was to hike the John Muir Trail this summer. If I liked that I would maybe consider the PCT. And then I went snowshoeing with Diane who had been my patient for about 15 years. By the end of the day we were planning a 2010 PCT hike. Within a few days she asked if I would consider a 2009 hike. My answer was “Why not?”
So, I’ve had 4 months to get ready and I haven’t been working. It should have been plenty of time. But, no. I’ve still got lots to do. I keep telling myself that I’m not going to the moon or to the South Pole. I will be in civilization (of some sort) every 2-6 days. I can always make gear changes or get what I have forgotten. I have a plane ticket to San Diego on April 22nd. Ready or not, I will start hiking on April 23rd.
My training has been so much less than what I would have liked it to be. I had foot issues for a few months which really slowed things down. But, I’m healthy now and I plan on getting in shape to hike by hiking!
I have decided to keep a journal for a bunch of reasons. In previous years I’ve really enjoyed reading other journals even of people I don’t know. I’m hoping that knowing I will be writing something at the end of the day will make me more aware and observant on the trail. Many friends and family members have expressed an interest in following my adventure. I’m hoping that the interest shown by others will keep me motivated and help me in those moments and/or days when it doesn’t seem that fun out there anymore. I’ve never kept a journal before. My mother has kept one for over 25 years. Does this mean I’m turning into my mother??!!
