Heinz, 82 and going strong

May 14 Day 22 Rd 1NO2 to about 3 miles past Hwy 18 22 miles 267 miles Heinz Dave dropped us back at the trail at 6:20. Almost immediately we met up with Heinz, an 82 year old Bavarian. He is section hiking the PCT. He hikes every piece twice because he does an out and back. He was amazing. He doesn't look his age and he kept up with us even on the uphills. He printed out his maps and had put GPS locations on the maps and on his GPS. He said he would compare what he mapped and what he actually found and then correct the trail as he had drawn it. How many 82 year olds would do any of that? He also says that for day hikes he doesn't bring any food with him because he doesn't want to carry it. He entertained us with stories and told us about his days as a mountaineer and rock climber when he was younger. When he was 30 he went on an expedition to South America and did several first ascents of mountains there. What a great morning. We've now completed 10% of the trail. When we got to Hwy 18 there was more trail magic. Why Wait and I split the last Payday candy bar left by a different Heinz and Nitro. I had met Nitro when she did the Continental Divide Trail in 2007 and I was hiking in the Wind River Range. Boomer, PCT 08, was waiting at the hwy to give hikers a ride into Big Bear. We are hiking 9 more trail miles before we go into Big Bear. Boomer said he would meet us at that rd, Van Dusen Rd, at 9:30 tomorrow morning. Supposedly that rd doesn't have much traffic and it's 3 miles into town so a guaranteed ride is awesome. Nancy
