Starting the morning at sunrise- again
Day 71- Donner Pass
Today was all about making the miles. Avo & LL were intent on making it to Donner Pass so they could hitch down the road to a restaurant for dinner. I knew I wouldn't be fast enough to keep up, but we agreed to camp together at Donner Pass when they got done with dinner. They don't call Lucky Larry "lucky" for nothing.
Funny Story: So I make it to Donner Pass and make camp around 8:30 pm. I called LL and he & Avo were still at the restaurant. It's dark and I make camp in this little patch of woods by the highway (Donner "Pass" is a highway crossing). And then I hear this rustling and branches breaking. There's an animal in these woods with me!! It's completely dark by this time and the moon hasn't quite made it up, so it's pretty pitch black. I shine my light into the woods and these 2 shiny eyes stare back at me- from, maybe, 20 feet away. And I fumble for my phone and call LL again. I'm such a baby. I swear it's a coyote or dog or something like that because the eyes were pretty close to the ground. I'm freaked out because I've also never heard an animal be so loud- what a ballsy animal! So I throw sticks and the thing doesn't go anywhere and it's so loud! It starts chopping, like it's eating sticks or something.....I lay there listening to this thing in the woods near me and I don't know why I'm so freaked...if it was a cat or dog thing- it wouldn't be so loud. It's just weird to me because this is a pretty small patch of woods and it's just me and the "animal" in here.......So eventually, LL & Avo stumble into the woods with me and LL makes fun of me because we're certain by now that it was a deer. Good thing I reached for my cell phone instead of my SPOT :)
