Catherine Creek training hike

Amidst cool, windy, partly cloudy weather, Karen, Vel and I started at Catherine Creek trailhead and chose the trail to the right. The trail starts out as a gravel road that gradually grows into a single track. Vel and Karen carried light daypacks and I carried a full pack (tent, sleeping bag, mess kit, water filter, extra clothing, etc) to see how my current walking shoes (Keens) handled the weight. I was also worried about blisters - no worries, my new Keens came through with flying colors.

Catherine Creek is a south facing slope with a nice ascent. We hiked up to 1,600 ft enjoying the gorgeous view of the Columbia River Gorge and wildflowers. A Hispanic man wearing an orange hard hat and dirty clothes stopped and asked us where the nearest road was. He said he had thirty workers somewhere behind him needing road access to do some maintenance work. Since we were smack dab in the middle of the open country, we replied that the nearest road was either Hwy 14, Courtney Rd, or north of us (which none of us could remember the name). He said okay, and went on his way. Weird.

Had lunch at a beautiful pine tree that we swear had "red blossoms" on it and overlooking the Columbia River. Loved the rock flowers gowing here and there. Tried to make a loop out of our trail but it ended up being an animal trail, so we just did a return hike back to the car.

Critters: birds, lizard, tick
