Braaten's Guest House

NCal Day 6

No big miles today. Reason? A late start and blow downs.

I had neighbor Bruce take me back to Belden at 7:30. I was well rested from a night's sleep in a bed. I decided to stick around for their breakfast. I didn't make it back on the trail until 9:30. The climb back out of Belden was pretty tough. With all the snow they've had this year, there were lots of raging streams to cross. In addition, there were dozens of blowdowns that one had to scramble over. It all made for very slow going. I hiked until dark and still only covered 22 miles. Coming out of Belden there couldn't have been more water. But funny enough, once on top of the ridge, there is a 22 mile stretch without water. So I camel'ed up at the last spring, cooked & ate dinner, and walked another 6 miles before camping for the night.

Coming out of Belden this morning, I startled 2 rattlers, one of which I got a good picture of. Once on top there were some very impressive views of Lassen Peak in the distance. Should be there soon.
