Pacific Crest Trail Map

july 11

acquired a baggie of powder from hiker box, ostensibly protein powder
after repeatedly forgetting to use it, have made a pt of putting a smidge in everything today...
it turns shit blue! a nasty brown green blue
not so noticeable in the midmorning blueberries and cream oatmeal, but the romano idahoans another story

swimming in middle fork feather river
felt so good!

if you swim in your undies, you will remain undisturbed. get nekkid, and other hikers will come along.
-murphy's first law of skinnydipping

so there i was, by the side of the river, in my underwear, eating blue green mashed potatoes

perfect opening line to the book i will never write

met a rattlesnake
did not respond with the poise of my last encounter
am out of practice
5 min later, started at a stick in the trail (started can mean "was startled by", right?)
several more snakes this afternoon

thought process of today:
7am goal for today is lookout rock
8am let's be honest, you're not going to pull a 30miler
3pm you'll make it
4pm buck's lake alternate route... if you haul it, maybe you can make it to a resort restaurant before they close
5pm burger burger burger burger burger
6pm you're not going to make it, quit dreaming about the damn burger, be glad you'll get to lookout rock, maybe if you're lucky you can get pancakes in the morning

7:40 arrive at lookout rock and that beautiful sign proclaiming trail angels in bucks lake
9:20 arrive at terry and nancy's
this weary traveler was immediately treated to chips, nectarines, watermelon, smores, and A BURGER!
and a shower
thank you nancy and terry and dennis and sherry!

(i swear i've got a lathe of heaven gig w.r.t. dreaming of trail angels)

by the book, skipper, frogger, snorkel, censored, bigfoot (a different one, strangely), batman, superdave all here

love/hate relationship with ultra-light-ism:
ears tune out the minute hear the phrase "x piece of gear weighs y ounces"
yet when i see all the folks carrying < .5(my base weight),
secretly aspire to be a gram weenie
sometimes my ridiculousness amazes even me

gossip from by the book:
the donner party headed *north* from donner pass
this clears things up
(tho not as entertaining an explanation)

gossip from nancy:
yogi beer came back on the trail
still plagued by injuries
back home
am sorry to hear it

awesome coda to a great day
life is good
so so very good
