Pacific Crest Trail Map

Journal Entry

With the anticipation that we could get into Big Bear City a couple of days earlier than expected by taking an different exit trail to the road, we woke early today. We started hiking at 5:45 and it was hot by 8. A lot of up and down today. There was a lot of place where the trail was washed out and we had to leap over them to continue on. As per average, to one side of the trail was a huge drop down and if we misstepped on those leaps we could be in trouble! We were moving at a pretty good pace. I think the anticipation of a town stop and respit from the heat kept us going.

We intended to make it to the 250 mile mark of the PCT and get to highway 38 to get into the city. As it turned out, while taking our last 20 min. break we heard a car coming up the dirt jeep trail that was close. We asked the driver, a 24 year old guy whos name escapes me, if he happened to be going to Big Bear. He replied "actually yes...I'm just up here messing aroud and killing time." So instead of making it to the 250 mark, we ONLY made it to the 246...whatever...same thing in my book.

We got into Big Bear and checked into the Motel 6. Hot shower, cool room, comfy bed, and television. We watched the weather channel for long enough to notice that it was pretty much raining over the whole country except California and Southern Texas...figures! We walked 2 miles down the road to the Sizzler and absolutly stuffed ourselves with the salad bar and steak and all-you-can-eat shrimp! Even had room for ice cream with caramel! We were so full that we refused to walked the two miles back to the room and ended up calling a cab :)

I think a drastic decision is in the works...next entry will tell....
