Don't trip on the skid marks

Well, I wish that I could say that I came to a screeching halt at Echo Lake – or in any manner (collapsing, sliding, skipping) – any manner other than “hobbling”. I wasn’t even limping; I was just pitifully hobbling. It seemed as if everything from my ass down hurt for one reason or another – but my knees were the constant drag. In the few hours it took to get down (and up and down) to the chalet, I thought about plan C and D (I had exhausted Plan B and several of its variants a while ago). It’s clear that I wasn’t making sufficient northward progress. I thought about that topic long and hard on more than one occasion – usually while preparing to snag a siesta.

Where was I? (I just had to take a nap.) OK. Well, I have mulled over the thought of creating an “after action report”, lessons-learned, or a win-loss report, maybe something with spreadsheets and charts (just to torment Randy Peterson in Reno). Perhaps that way, I could figure out what specific situations arose that caused me to fall so far behind, to tire so easily, and what actions I might take to resolve them in the next go-around. The subtext of my new plan - remain flexible.

I also want to re-visit my own notes (I’ve not actually seen any of my journal entries online since April) and refresh my memory, fill-in details, and generally remember all of the people I met and good times I had. Hikers, trail angels, donors, contributors, merchants, cooks, barbers, restaurant servers, motel operators, random drivers, trail crew members, rangers, old friends and new friends – all of you made my 1,097.2 mile journey possible.

At this point, my overall plan is to regard what I accomplished this year as a start and that next year will see the completion of my journey on the trail. My purpose remains to bring attention to and raise funds for the BRPS and RP Fighting Blindness. I now have a little more time to devote toward that effort. More after a brief siesta.

Hasta la pasta.
