Pacific Crest Trail Map

To get organized before the hike

I'm sitting at home on a cold spring afternoon in Toronto. Winds are 90 km/h. I'll take the subway to work, though normally I walk. (Shouldn't everyone who is in the midst of planning a long-distance hike refuse to take motorized transport when travelling short distances?)
Six months ago, I was safely ensconced in my well-paying corporate job. I drove my little car an hour each way to work. I watched the sun rise and set outside my office window. I exercised at the gym. I lived in a forest of concrete high-rises, where masses of people scuttled to and fro, smoking cigarettes on lunch breaks.

I suppose I was on track to save for a well-appointed condo in a nice area of the city. Maybe nudge myself an inch or two up the corporate ladder and take my three weeks a year to lie on some sun-drenched beach in the Caribbean.

But in November I quit my job and sold my car. I've been working as a waitress to have time to plan for this trip. I plan to watch the economy slowly slide into recession from the safety of the trail.
