Walking the Desert Aquaduct on Record Cold Day

Across Antelope Valley (Mojave Desert)

After an egg and pancake breakfast at Hiker Town, I began to head across the desert next to the Aqueduct. About 3 miles in a guy waved me down and introduced himself as Bobby Rodriquez, a retired garbage truck driver, who now in retirement walked to roads of the desert picking up cans and other garbage. He wanted to hear everything about the PCT and asked to walk with me for a bit. I welcomed him and three and half hours later he was still walking with me and I don’t think I had said a word.

Bobby has had quite an interesting life … and I got to hear the whole thing in three plus hours. When I told him I was concerned that he had walked at least 10 miles with me – he finally agreed and turned back for home. It was very interesting to have crossed paths with him and heard his life story. He was thinking about applying to be the care taker at the Warner Springs Mission in retirement. I hope he does so as I think it would be a great job for him.

I got to Cottonwood Creek after leaving the Aqueduct at around 5:30 PM to have a late lunch and then push on when I realized I had LOST my GPS beacon. This was not good. I last had it at Hiker Town. I had Big Dick’s business card and I fortunately had mobile coverage so I gave him a call. Sure enough, he had found it at Hiker Town (fell out of my pocket). He agreed to drive it out to me as there was a jeep road that came out to Cottonwood Creek. 2 hours later he arrived with my GPS SPOT beacon. I was so gracious that he was willing to drive it all the way out to me. Also, Jack Rabbit and HWAP accompanied him. And finally, they brought me a Tupperware dish with dinner in it. Very nice.

The amazing thing is that I hiked most of the day with a stocking cap on … IN THE DESERT. I had completely lucked out and went across in VERY unusual cold weather. It never got above 60 degrees the whole day. I hiked until well after dark that night as I wanted to make higher elevation in case the temps got hot again the next day. I finally arrived at Tyler Horse Canyon at 11:00 PM and decided it was time to call it a day.
