Pacific Crest Trail Map

Pacific Crest Trail 2009

Ill do it next year. That turned in to next decade. Then, next century, as there was a change along the way. I cant put it off any longer. The Pacific Crest Trail is on a very short list of the worlds best hiking trails. It will be my most difficult undertaking and one that I am not sure I can do.

What could go wrong? Read about Dan and Allisons miss-adventure in the book The Cactus Eaters (The Cactus Eaters: How I Lost My Mind-and Almost Found Myself -- on the Pacific Crest Trail). Some examples include [they are]dizzy with dehydration; bizarre gummy-bear-and-marshmallow diets; Dan dumping out pints of water in the desert, because it is too heavy; or Dan disposing of much of their food after Allison procures a fishing rod. The list goes on. They were beginning mistakes. Ive already made those. Repeatedly. So, Ill be working on the more advanced mistakes.

As I write this, Paco Bells Canon is playing in the background. An auspicious beginning. How long will it be before the music changes to something with a little more tension, like music from Beethovens Storm and Stress period; then continues downhill with the music from the movie Jaws; or maybe even some tri-tones from an Alfred Hitchcock movie?

The photo is the deer in the head-lights look --- which about sums-up my state of mind during my seat-of-the-pants trip preparations --- which is followed immediately by an image of being out in the middle of nowhere and the thought, no, the scream, What the hell am I doing here?

I did the John Muir Trail in 1999. A number of the Sierra passes, I have been over several times. But, I have never done a thru-hike. And, never hiked on 85% of the PCT. And, I have never achieved light-weight Nirvana. It follows that I have never achieved a lightweight pack AND Nirvana. Just modest goals so far. Stay tuned.
