Last Night's Chocolate Torte, Yum!

Water

Today was an unusual three part day of hiking with the common thread
being NO WATER for 26 miles. I left the lodge after gulping down 1 1/2
liters of water and carried another 5 on my back (Heavy! About 11
pounds). The first third of the day leaving the lodge was hiking
around the western half of Crater Lake up and down the rim with
amazing views of WIzard Island, the more recent volcano within a
volcano and the big rocky bluff jutting out over the lake. The second
third was a hot, dusty, flat and straight trail through forests of
skinny scrawny 30 foot pine trees that offered almost no shade. And
finally we started climbing the flanks of Mt Thielson through older
larger timber with shade. I hiked baton passing style with Fester most
of the day but after passing him a couple hours before the much
awaited Thielson Creek haven't seen him since. Gnar and I are sharing
a campsite and had a nice fire while cooking our dinners. He' also
trying to meet up with friends at Willamette Pass. I need to cover 57
miles in the next two days to meet Jake Friday evening, big days but
the terrain ahead looks pretty flat again so if I get an early start
and beat the heat I can do it. Thanks for reading! Charlie
