Starting line

Day 1: D-Day

So, how crazy do you have to be to get up at 4:15 to start a hike? And how nice do you have to be to give a ride to those crazy people? Lance and Allison both work evening jobs, so their help getting to the trailhead was doubly nice. Thanks, guys! After signing the register at the border at 5:45 and saying our goodbyes, we were off and walking. We made it about 5 minutes into the walk, when we had our first encounter with the border patrol, a nice guy who hiked the trail with his boys. The border patrol was everywhere...we saw them many times during the day. One agent was telling us about cell phone reception, which depended on whom you're with. Yeahbut piped in with "she's with me!" Border patrol rapidly moved on... We tend to be morning hikers but with a catch. Yeahbut loves to take photos in the early light. Slows us down a bit, but worth it in the end. The mist in the lowlands, the flowers blooming everywhere, and the plentiful water (by AZ standards) made for beautiful hiking. There's a purple bush called ceanothus covering the hills with flowers. The terrain was granitic boulders and peaks, reminding us of Prescott. The trail around Lake Morena had glittering reddish mica in the decomposed granite. We arrived at the Lake at 3PM, stopped at the ranger station to pay our fee. The Coke machine there was an added bonus. A great hike, and now we're tucked into a backpackers campsite at the lake, all cleaned up (and ready for bed once it gets dark). Temps will be near freezing and there probably will be some dew. There are several other PCTers here, and we're all swapping our stories. Time to plan for tomorrow and work on dinner.
