Descending to desert

Day 17: Cinco de Mayo

We caught a ride out of Idyllwild from the Idyllwild Inn owner. He piled hikers into his truck, shuttling loads to various hike starts. The Inn takes good care of hikers! There were 5 of us hiking up the road to the trailhead at the north end of Fuller Ridge. After the first few miles, the road was gated and we started to hit patches of snow. We filled up our water bottles, since Snow Creek is supposed to be a long, dry descent. There were some snow banks to cross once we hit the trail, but nothing difficult. The 5 of us stayed roughly together until after lunch, when we were clear of snow. I don't think any of us wanted to hike far today, but sometimes the terrain dictates the distance. A geologist once told me the the San Jacinto escarpment is the longest in the continental US. What we faced was a 15-16 mile descent of approx 6000+ vertical feet. The steepness of the landscape made for few camping opportunities, as the trail meandered back and forth in incredibly long, brushy switchbacks. Hard to make good time with all the brush. Each of the 5 of us reunited on a rough ledgy area to camp. I don't know about the others, but my legs are tired! We have plenty of water for a dry camp. The view of the mountain from here is pretty spectacular. The contrast between the desert surrounding here and the snow-capped peak above us... Time for some sleep.
