Day 19: on a Mission
We got our earlist start yet, but everyone still beat us out of camp. I felt a bit tired, maybe the result of the heat and/or two longer days. Today was to be an uphill day, as we begin to regain the elevation we lost leaving the San Jacintos. We slowly contoured around the hills until we reached Mission Creek. We spent the rest of the day ascending it. The drainage has been damaged by fire and flash flood, so the trail is intermittent. It was a fun challenge in some ways to try to pick out the path, or figure out how to cross the creek (which is flowing well with snow melt). While my feet were never totally submerged, they did get wet some. Anyhow, it was a tiring, slow struggle. We fared better than some...at least the heat didn't bother us as much as those from cooler climates. We discussed going a bit farther today, but we'll probably have fresher legs tomorrow by stopping now. Tomorrow, we continue to climb over 8000 feet (we're at 6000 now).
