Leibre Mountains

Day 38

Splat...Splat, splat, splat...SPLAT! We awoke to the sounds of water hitting our tent. We'd camped out of the wind between a big oak tree and some brush. Yeahbut ventured out first. Clouds of mist were blowing over the mountain, dampening everthing and causing the tree to drip on us. Although it was cold and damp, it wasn't raining. The trail was just as dusty as the day before. We hugged the 5000 foot contour line for several miles. Alternated between freezing cold winds/mist and cool, sunlit oak forest. I think this is one of my favorite areas so far. We continued to be careful about water, stopping at another cistern to camel up (drink our fill) and refill bottles. We passed the on-PCT 500 mile mark. This means that we've completed 2 of the 10-11 JMT hikes this trail could be made of. We also are done with the 'San' ranges: San Fellipe, Jacinto, Gorgonio, Bernadino, etc. We haven't really been warm since we started! A friend who lives in the area said that it was snowing when he drove thru Cajon Pass a few days ago. The Green Valley mailperson, who has property at Kennedy Meadows (the entry point to the Sierras) said they had 6-8 inches of new snow when she was there last weekend. We eventually today descended out of the Liebre Mts to the floor of the Mojave desert. Temps here are bearable (highs around 60). We're stopped for the night at a little place that makes room for hikers. We covered a reasonable amount of ground today, but we're both dealing with sore feet. Should sleep warm tonight!
