Leaving Kennedy Meadows

Day 53

Well, the best laid started to rain last night during the happy hour at the General Store. This immediately dampened our interest in hiking 2.5 miles to the campground. Fortunately, there's a trail angel named Tom who lives across the street from the store. He has a collection of motor homes and trailers that he let's hikers use. He nicely allowed us to stay out of the weather. This morning, we met up with the group we hope to hike thru the Sierras with. After a bit of organizing, we all hit the trail. The pace was a bit fast for me, but things slowed down as we progressed. We shared the initial trail miles with a boy scout troup. Strange to be the example the troup leaders pointed to: 'they're hiking 2700 miles!' We crossed the S Fork of the Kern River and spent the afternoon circling beautiful alpine meadows. The clouds gradually built and it started to rain around 4, just when we reached our first potential campsite. We all hurriedly set up camp and waited out the mild storm. We can tell that we're in the mountains. It's cold. The ups and downs are harder with the altitude. Tomorrow, we go up and down and up around the 10,000 foot mark. If reports are right, we shouldn't hit snow tomorrow. But the climb will still challenge us.
