Early morning view of Lassen
Day 62
The stars were brilliant last night. The pink glow of dawn on Mt Lassen was soft and peaceful. We started early, but paused frequently for photos. Over the course of several miles, we descended open sagebrush slopes and entered burned forest. We followed trail covered with bovine tracks and scat until we encountered them. My true calling is as a cow whisperer; they let us pass. Yeahbut asked one 'what do you drink up here?' And I swear I heard it answer 'what are you offering?' There were a few more wildflowers, arrow leaf balsam root, something that looked like a morning glory. The day was as hot as yesterday. No water until we reached town. At the bottom of the hill, there was a side trail to Subway Cave. We got to walk thru the largest lava tube I've ever seen. The coolness in the cave was a welcome relief after the heat of the afternoon. We walked a short distance down the highway to JJ's, a wonderful cafe with huge portions and homemade breads. Then we continued down the trail a few more miles until an exit that put us near a trail angel's home. So we are well-fed, clean, and ready for a peaceful night's sleep.
