Looking down into LA basin from Henninger Flats

Henninger Flats

Hiked up out of Altadena through Eaton Canyon to Henninger Flats. 1600 ft climb up the barren south facing edge of the San Gabriel Mountains. Henninger Flats has campsites, a garden, an old fire lookout tower and a mini museum. Pretty great place for a short day hike. For a longer day hike, you could keep hiking all the way up to Mt. Wilson. It's January here in SoCal and yet it was at least 70 degrees on our hike. The bright sun beating down on us on the open road had beads of sweat forming in no time.

It was the first real climbing hike that we've done since the trail and it felt good. I'm sure the muscles in our legs were appreciative for the exercise. We don't want our muscles to turn to mush before we get back on the trail next summer! We've been active since the trail but there's just nothing like hiking 20 miles a day. And you can't just run out for a few hours and squeeze in those 20 miles. Ha!

Just posted a few more videos from our trip on Facebook and it's fun to relive the memories. For those of you new to the trail this year, the unique connections and memories you make with other hikers are simply irreplaceable!
