The sun hinting its arrival

Primitive Crossing

Got up and out of camp by 7am. Low energy and cold stiff muscles got us along to our breakfast break around 8:15am.

We got a bit of a boost from the breakfast and seeing the sun hint that it might come out raised our spirits too. Not too long after breakfast we hiked across the side of Chikamin Ridge. Canadoug caught up to us, and we chatted and hiked for a bit before taking a snack break in the sunshine. The glorious sunshine!

Got to see the spot where Canadoug, Lil' Buddha and Rocket Man camped last year for 36 hours in the snow and cold. Nice little spot, but rough conditions aat the time. Good of them to turn around and head back to Snoqualmie. Rocket Man sums up the experience out there well by saying that he promised his family that he would not risk his life.

Amid a long descent, we had a nice lunch at the roaring Delate Creek next to a huge waterfall. Took the soaked shoes off and let the feet dry a bit while Gino nearly lots the tent over the edge.

Had a little adventure today after taking a wrong turn towards Pete's Lake. Came down the Lemah Creek where we saw Canadoug across on the other side. We took off our shoes to cross. There was a sign on the far side that labeled this as a 'primitive crossing'. Gave us all a good laugh. Canadoug had just headed out when Lion Heart thought that he was heading the wrong way. So, Gino went running after him and soon came back assured that Canadoug was heading the right way. We headed out after him and after 10-15 mintues Lion Heart stopped to look at the map again this time with a compass, still with the feeling that we were heading the wrong way. Gino ran after Canadoug again with compass and map in hand. After awhile Gino returns and says that Canadoug still thinks we're going the right way. Canadoug said he would wait a few mintues for us to catch up and talk about the map together. Meanwhile, two men had hiked by and Canadoug has asked them where they were headed. Pete Lake they answer. Well shit, that certainly wasn't the way we wanted to be heading. So, here comes Canadoug trotting down the trail saying we were heading the wrong way. We looked at the map a bit more and figured out where we had gone wrong. We'd both missed a turn on the PCT not too far before arriving at the 'primitive crossing'.

After and hour and a half we finally made our way back to the PCT and decided there wasn't time to make the six mile ascent up the trail before dark. So we made a nice camp by the river and had another early day. But this time we were dry and in much better spirits.

No campfire, but it was fairly warm and we stayed up talking about 2009 trail gossip long after dinner time. Canadoug has a great memory for trail adventures and recounts them like they were yesterday. We all enjoyed reliving some of the fun times, people, and places of last year's hike!
