Canadoug describes his breakfast: barley sandwichs, chips, snkr

Half And Half

Woke up at the pass with dry and warm weather - clear skies. Trail was beautiful, wide, clear and mostly flat at first. After a few miles or so the trail turned steep with lots of ups and downs - this was to the norm for the day.

Made good time and had lunch break/nap in the warm sunshine. Sugar Moma and Frankie (SM's dog) caught up with us, but no Canadoug. Some hikers said they saw him a ways back smokin' a stogie and drinkin' a beer by a tree. (Check my Facebook for the classic video of Canadoug describing his breakfast)!

Around 2-2:30 we felt the cool air of the coming storm blow in all around us. The sky clouded over and it grew pretty dark in some areas. After not too long it started to rain. This is our first day on the trail that it was really raining. At one point the rain became pretty heavy, so we waited a few minutes under some big hemlock trees until it let up. We saw about five marmots run down the mountainside and disappear into some boulders. They were white bodied with gray tails and heads. They moved quickly in a catlike fashion.

About an hour from camp, Gino spotted a bear running through the meadow up ahead of Lion Heart. We stopped and watched as he made his way up and around a small clump of trees.

A sweet break in the rain gave us a fairly dry hike into camp, but rain almost caught us setting up out tent at the lake. A close one. Here with Sugar Moma tonight but no Canadoug. I'm sure he'll catch us tomorrow.
