Shopping for Gear

Today I took my young hiker, who is a runner and known as Flash, and her mother to the REI in Kennewick so that they could shop for gear. I have quite a bit of duplicate gear that Flash can use; however, what I don't have is clothing in her size. She tried on hiking shoes and of course, the sales person insisted that she wanted to get the shoes in her size and not larger. Fortunately, Flash was just trying on shoes. As it turns out, I have two pairs of Vasque boots that may fit Flash, so that will save her some money. Of course, she may decide to shop for the Vasque hiking shoes online.

Then we went to the clothing section where Flash tried on convertible pants and shirts. What a surprise for us. Flash's mother started her off with size 8, and went down to a size 2. Flash decided that the size 4 fit the best. Flash is as tall as I am, if not a little taller, and there is no way I'll ever see size 4 again, unless it has a one in front of it. Flash tried on an Ex Officio shirt, which fit well - even the sleeves were long enough. Last year's color is on sale at REI online.

Finally Flash tried on some long underwear. It was on sale, and Flash her mother decided to purchase the underwear today. We looked a pre-packaed meals. I have no expeience eating any of it except the dark chocolate mousse. I inventoried my camping food at home last night and have more than enough on hand for this year's hike. We looked at stoves and pans. I showed Flash and her mother what I already had, so that both of us woulld have a stove and cooking gear. Then we looked at headlamps. Flash's dad has a fancy model, but it's heavy. There was a child's model on sale, and Flash has a small head. So she bought that too.

By the time we exited REI, Flash said she was on overload. I need to order an x-small hip belt for the Osprey pack that I'm loaning Flash, and then she needs to decide what additional gear she will need.
