Pacific Crest Trail Map

to the Rim

First full day on the PCT SOBO (southbound). Walk down to cross Hwy 299 (to Alturas) and along bluff overlooking Hat Creek. On down along the reservoir to the Crystal Lake State Fish Hatchery and Dam. Encountered my one and only hiker for the day just before the reservoir. Thru hiker, Captain Bivy was heading North after jumping up ahead to avoid the difficult snow conditions in the high Sierra. He had just passed the water cache at "road 22" the day previous and told me it had just been restocked. Was very welcome news. I walked into the hatchery parking lot and found tap water, restrooms and picnic area. Lunch and a nap in the shade on the new mowed lawn was in order. It was very hot, and I relaxed till about 4:00 and started out again. I thought that after about 4:00 it would start cooling off, but think in actuality, it just kept getting hotter till the sun set. After about 7 more miles and the relief of sunset, I had crossed the paved road with the painted footprints and found myself at the base of the cliffs of Hat Creek Rim. Camp, and a very pleasant evening serenaded by the Canyon Wrens and other birds.
