Camp Below Rock Creek Pass

We stopped short of the Canadian border not knowing if there was decent camping there--the guide books made no mention of it. We were passed by about 6 thru hikers that evening, scenting blood and going for it. Our camp was a cramped, slanted, humid one in the forest, but this was bearable because we knew that victory was at hand. The huckleberries on this section of the trail were incredible. Few thru hikers stop to pick them, so there were many right next to the trail. The huckleberries remind me of a blueberry crossed with a cherry.

We saw Smokey the Beard, Woodward, Crissy and Dodge returning from the Canadian border to get back to Harts Pass. The scenery was dramatic. The trail was very steep--I can see why earlier season southbounders were turned back. I couldn't imagine doing this section with snow. Definitely ice axe and crampon territory.

I was excited to meet a guy doing the Pacific Northwest Trail, coming from Glacier National Park and heading for the Pacific Ocean. The trail joins the Pacific Crest Trail at Castle Pass.
