Border Shot

Canada at last

It was almost a let down getting to the border after having this goal in my mind since 1976. I thought I would cry and carry on, but I spent about an hour there taking pictures and reading the journal entries--I was happy but not that emotional. The weather cleared to a bluebird day--as if to say "OK, I've thrown everything I can at you and you made it. Now I can relax and do Indian Summer." Great irony.

The border clearcut is interesting stretching out into the distance and up the steep slope east of marker 78. I see that Rainbow Brite and Hula Daddy made it, as did Old Scout. Yay!

Leaving the border we met an older trail runner who was accompanying Bob Holtel on his second run of the PCT in his 79th year. He wrote a book on his first run of the PCT 25 years ago.He was from Ashland as well--a fitting person to meet on our way out, re-assuring us of many good trail years in the future. We were just youngsters next to him. I took a video of him approaching on the trail.

The Manning Park Lodge was another paradise. We stayed at the lodge. The people are very helpful and friendly. We caught the next morning's bus to Vancouver and made it to the airport and a flight to Medford that evening and were back in Ashland by 11 PM on September 15th.
