More Castle Crags

Phlox and mountains and cramps - oh boy

I don't know if anyone has had a charlie horse in the middle of the night in a sleeping bag in a one-person tent - it was unpleasant. Today, I definitely noticed the side effects of yesterday's dehydration issues. My plan was 10 to 12 miles, I did 8. Fortunately, there was only 1000' of gain but I was still fried.

As I got higher, there were great views of Shasta, Castle Crags, and other surrounding peaks. Unfortunately, good views means no shade. Also, as I got higher, the wild flowers were more abundant especially paintbrush and phlox.

When I spotted the first of the lakes in 7 Lakes Basin, I figured that was my destination for the day in spite of the 600' drop into the lake area. Then I noticed it was only 200' drop to Helen Lake - BINGO. It was a lonely little lake probably only visited by hunters, drinking hunters, and the occasional PCT hiker.
