trail signs to Elk Lake

Elk Lake

I've been at Elk Lake a couple of days. Yellowstone is here and we're
hanging out in a camper pickup that Jay, the manager, kindly rented to
us. It's been a good visit catching up, laughing about stuff. Tahoe
Mike and Vino are also here-what great guys! We all shared dinner and
a few drinks last night. But I'm afraid this is the end of the trail
for me. Between shoulder and foot problems, sort of the last straw is
a tent problem. The zipper is broken, and there's way too many mozzies
to have a wide open tent, beckoning them in. Any repair might take
awhile, and I'm not up to that now. Dave is coming here today to pick
me up. He is bringing another small tent, but it's heavy. We may go to
the Oregon coast for a couple of days. Later this summer-maybe I'll do
the WA section near my home. The snow in a lot of places in WA is
still outrageous. It may never melt before the new snow flies. I feel
like I'm wimping out a bit, but I also know this hasn't been fun more
often than not. My feet are so sore, it's hot, buggy. I guess I feel
like I've tested myself as a lone through hiker and passed. I learned
lot, was not afraid, relied on many skills I've picked up, and kept my
thoughts busy. I didn't always like being alone. You do get to make
your own choices about things, own decisions, and that's empowering.
But there is a loneliness factor. It's been a challenge, not something
I've expected to do. I've met some awesome, tough hikers -what an
interesting community that is! I want to be part of them for a long
time. Thanks to Bag Lady, Kiwi and Moa, Meander, Bacon, Tahoe Mike,
Vino, Shroomer, and so many cool hikers I met along the way who
inspired me. And of course, Yellowstone, who is always an
inspirational force of nature. Love ya
