The Ride Bride

The Ride Bride

We will be hitchhiking on this PCT adventure. Some of our resupply towns are well off the trail.

Our first hitch will likely be in Idyllwild (mile 178) a 3 mile hitch down the hill. We know this area well. The rock climbers who frequent that road are a good bunch and we shouldn't have to wait long.

Onyx, CA at PCT mile 652 is a big hitch, almost 18 miles and Lone Pine, CA, a 20 mile hitch on a secondary road. Usually getting into town is easier than hitching your way back out to the trail. Notice that we didn't say "hitch-hike", hopefully it is all hitch and no hike.

Barb: Yep, I'm the "Ride Bride", the babe that stands along the edge of the road with her thumb out while Jack lurks nearby in the bushes. The car stops and we both jump in - wooo, another short wait for a ride.

We last hitched a couple of years ago from the Stagecoach bar to Teton Pass near Jackson, WY - Hitching is so common there, it is like carpooling - never waited more than 5 minutes! And, I did hitchhike when I was in college in '74 and '75 - mostly to get to and from school (hope my mother isn't reading this!) - I never hitched alone, always with a guy. And I will be comfortable hitching nowdays, out near the PCT, as long as I'm with Jack. He was a veteran hitcher back in the late 60's and early 70's. Once he was in a race with his friend Eric trying to see who could cross the US in the least amount of time. Jack won the challenge going from San Diego to Washington, DC in 52 hours (5 rides). Eric still calls him the "golden thumb".

I know Jack is always glad to have his "ride bride" along as we will be much more likely to snag a ride as a mixed pair.

So, how does my outfit look? Would you stop and pick us up? The outfit only weighs 14 oz and if I punch holes in the sign, I can lash it on to the back of my pack and reuse it over and over. I could also add high heels to the outfit and they could double as shoes for stream crossings - keep my hiking shoes dry. What do ya think?
