Our sheltered campsite

Winter in May

It was a cold morning but we knew what we wanted to do. Get an early start and try to make it to Big Bear before dark. That meant 24 miles. But, we were already over the hump and the elevation gain today was a mere 2,500 or so feet.

The alarm went off at 5:30 and we forced ourselves out of our toasty bags and into the freezing cold. Today, there was no fussing around. We packed up quickly, grabbed a couple of "Oatmeal on the Run" bars and headed out. It was 6:15.

WOW. Such beauty. All the trees were covered with hoar frost. It was cold but a welcome cold as we were burning calories. In cold like this, we would need much less water. And we had our Malto beverages to keep us supplied with energy. Planning on Big Bear for the destination, we could eat up all our snack foods. Snicker bars, Pay Day bars, Lara bars, beef jerkey, Famous Amos cookies. We didn't stop for lunch but instead ate snacks throughout the day (and washed them down with Malto!)

We passed the animal cages. Their poor little souls, all locked up in tiny little cages. We saw a lion, gorilla, grizzly bear, tiger and a dog, all locked up. The bear was pacing back and forth.

Somewhere along the way we hit the Big Bear Hostel goodie cache. Two ice chests near a dirt road, on the trail, with yummy apples, bananas, and soft drinks. We stopped and ate apples. Thanks!

On we went, the wind started picking up and it was cold. We popped out onto Highway 18 at about 5pm and started hitching the 8 miles or so to town. Boo was again getting disenchanted when the first 10 cars passed by (she is new to this hitching thing).

It was so very cold up there on the grade. Wind chill must have been about 15 degrees. One man with his wife in a truck stopped but only momentarily then sped off. We guess the wife said "No, honey, keep going". After about 15 minutes a very nice man named Dick L. picked us up in his truck. We got to ride inside too. He went way out of his way to take us to the Big Bear Hostel and refused to take any gas money. Again, this generosity brings tears to our eyes.

We checked in and went out and ordered a Large Pizza. We ate the whole thing. It was snowing outside while we ate.

We managed to upload a video of the morning section. It really was a sight to behold. Watch the video.
