Storms approaching
5:30 am we're 12 miles before Wrightwood. Storm approaching tomorrow and Wednesday. May try to punch through Mt. Badden Powell (9000 feet) . Or we will be stuck in town for 2 days. Packing up now 4 early start. If we go for it, it could be hairy . Stay tuned.
.
.
Ok, we made it to Wrightwood at about 2pm.?? We popped out onto Highway 2 at about 12:30 but there was absolutely no traffic on the Angeles Crest Highway.?? Fortunately, we met a lady walking her dog an hour before and she offered us a ride if we were still hitching when she returned to her car.?? Well, we were and Lori graciously drove us down the hill (an 8 mile walk - as a last resort).?? Barb got to ride in the back with the dog, who loves to lick people!
So we are now checked in at the Canyon Creek Inn and trying to get as much beta on the storm as we can.
It looks like a doozer.?? It is going to hit the area this night and run almost continuously until Wednesday.?? That's almost 3 lost days here in Wrightwood.?? We weighed the options.?? We both feel comfortable on snow and even in blizzard conditions but Barb's blisters are killing her and we aren't totally equipped for a storm of this magnitude (we shipped our snow gaiters home at Idyllwild and we are both lacking in warm gloves and ski goggles would be helpful too!).
So, along with a number of other thru's, we have opted to hang here in Wrightwood for the duration of the storm
It is really an atypical storm.?? Snow in Wrightwood on May 17th.?? Very odd.
We had a big lunch at the local Mexican food joint - they had a special.?? Big burrito, beans and rice plus all the chips you can eat.
It looked good and we were famished but after stuffing down all that food, neither of us felt very good.
Wrangler, remember him??? Well, he gave us a call when we were camping high up on the mountain last night.?? He was a day ahead of us and was planning on doing Badden Powell today.?? There is a small window of opportunity but you have to go far today or you will get hammered tomorrow.?? We hope Wrangler makes it through ok.?? We will let you know when we hear from him.
