Sierra Crossing Details

OK, here's our plan. You hikers behind us may find it useful however, snow conditions could change things.

We are going in with the Kiwis, Duncan and Barbara (DnB). They were originally going to flip it but decided to do the Sierras after discovering that there is just as much snow north as there is down here. They will be hiking to Mt. Whitney while we rest and zero out at mile marker 774.

The key to the data is as follows: Day, Date, Mile markers, Amount of vertical that day, distance for the day, and finally, the altitude we will be camping at that evening.

1. 6/9 * 702-719 * 3,400' * 17 miles * 8,500 ft. (we start with seven days of food)

2. 6/10 * 719-741 * 4,100 ' * 22 miles * 9,800 ft.

3. 6/11 * 741-760 * 2,900' * 19 miles * 9,600 ft.

4. 6/12 * 760-774 * 4,266' * 14 miles * 11,000 ft. (JnB hike here and hang - we could be snow camping)

4. 6/12 * 760-Guitar Lake * ? * 10 miles * 11,467 ft (DnB hike here and set up for Whitney)

5. 6/13 * Hanging at 774 * JnB

5. 6/13 * Guitar to Whitney to mile 774 * 4,514 ' * 16 miles (some slackpacking) * 11,467 ft. (DnB)

6. 6/14 * 774-788 * 3,050' * 14 miles * Forrester Pass * 10,000 ft.

7. 6/15 * 788-Kearsarge Pass, out to road, for resupply in Independence, 10 miles *

8. 6/16 * From trailhead, up 11 miles and 2,800 ft to mile 789 * camp at 11,000 ft. (8 Days of food)

9. 6/17 * 789-803 * 2,760' * 14 miles * Glen Pass * Camp at 10,000 ft.

10. 6/18 * 803-814 * 3,025' * 11 miles * Pinchot Pass * 11,000 ft.

11. 6/19 * 814-830 * 1,784' * 16 miles * Mather Pass * 8,500 ft.

12. 6/20 * 830-846 * 3,740' * 16 miles * Muir Pass * 10,000 ft.

13. 6/21 * 846-863 * 2,577' * 17 miles * No pass today * 10,000 ft.

14. 6/22 * 863-879 * 1,980' * 16 miles * Selden Pass * Start early, catch the 4pm boat to VVR at mile 879

15. 6/23 * 879-892 * 4,512' * 13 miles * Silver Pass * 10,500 ft.

16. 6/24 * 892-903 to Mammoth Lakes Trail (11 plus 5 miles) * 1,085' * bus to town

17. 6/25 *Mammoth * Zero (Resupply for three days)

18. 6/26 * 903-915 * 4,000' * 5 plus 12 miles * 8,300 ft camp at Agnew Meadows (break out the DEET!)

19. 6/27 *915-927 * 3,153' * 12 miles * camp at 10,000 ft, setting up for Donohue Pass

20. 6/28 *927-941 * 2,000' * 14 miles * Mile 941, we arrive at Tuolumne Meadows. Is the Pass open? Is our resupply box there?

Side note: We see so many hikers heading out from here with absolutely no plan. Just throw a bunch of Ramen in your pack and go. One guy has no maps or gps. You may read about him in the news. HYOH. Buena Suerte, Senor! (that means "good luck, dude!).
