Cruising through the Lava field - this was great trail
Volcanic Rocks
I woke up in the dark this morning. The air was very humid and there was a gusty breeze. It was about 70 degrees. Just for a moment, I thought I was on the North shore of Kauai and it was time to grab the trunks and go check out the waves. Nope, I was snuggled in my one man tent, right on the PCT, with a whole bunch of volcanic rocks ahead.
I was on the trail by 6:20. I had miles to do. Perhaps I could bank some more and make life easier on my last day to Big Lake.
it wasn't an easy start. This area is solid volcanic rock. They cut the trail right through it. For some of it, you have a nice smooth trail but for much of it, you are walking on rock, little crushed up lava rock or sometimes bigger chunks. It hurt my foot and slowed me down but still offered interesting sights (see the pics).
It wasn't a really scenic day. I went through a lot of burnt forest but still managed to pull off a 14 by 12. That's good.
It was getting dark when I reached mile 1804. I had pulled off another 30 and put two more miles in the bank. I was tired but not exhausted.
