Pacific Crest Trail Map
Woke up around 8 and boy did it feel good to sleep in. The wind was once again howling coming from the west. Had to put on long johns under my shorts aas well as my fleece anorak over my shirt. Made some coffee in the french Press and then went in search of the PCTA to help set up. Contrary to what I had been told, there was no canopy. There were some women trying to attach a banner to a picnic table and I helped hold it down while they tried to fasten it in place. What with the wind, that was a losing battle.
People slowly came onto the island. I went back and re-looked at the vendors, seeing a few that were not set up yesterday. Got a carabiner from Z-packs, and a projecting spork, camp towel, and plastic flask from Next Adventure. I tried on an Osprey pack, but still not sure what I want.
Wandered back to my campsite and ate the rest of the cinnamon rolls. Craig, the motorcyclist and soon-to-be PCT thru hiker, and I chatted on the chairs I set up. Jackrabbit and Hooker came by to chat with Mad Hatter. He was explaining his house problem in Bend.
I wandered up to the campground and noticed that Buttercup had a new z-packs cuben backpack and he bought a six moons tarp tent. His shoes were shot, so I called the REI in downtown Portland. They set aside a pair of shoes in his model and size to pick up today or tomorrow.
Finally, I took the chairs up to the main part of the island for the raffle. It was slow to start. There were lots of nice items donated, but alas, I won nothing. Some people were really lucky. Buttercup won two sets of microspikes, one of which he promptly sold. Bugs Bunny won the Feathered Friends vest, which Bugs said fit Bunny better.
On the way off the island, I talked with a few throughs as to their plans. They were leaning towards getting a ride to Portland tonight, staying with a friend of Wiz's and then coming back tomorrow morning and getting back on the trail NB.
I went up to the Eastwind Drive In for dinner of a bacon cheeseburger and fries. Brought it back and then wandered back to the island to get ready for the movie. Saw Amoeba and Billy Goat and Craig and I brought all of the chairs up so everyone had a seat. The featured presentation was 6 Million Steps. Billy Goat went back to the motel about half way through, but Amoeba stayed. She was sitting between Andrea D. and myself.
After the movie was over, we packed the chairs back to my site, and then I made my way off the island, across the parking lot and up the hill to the bathroom. Unbelievable that there are two bathrooms for the campground and the island. Seems like to me there were porta potties for the island last year.
Went to bed seeing the lights of a UP train on the Washington side and a lighted tugboat pushing a barge on the Columbia River.
Lost and Found
"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, Guinness in one hand, steak in the other, yell 'Holy Sh**, What a Ride!"
