Day 24

As I mentioned yesterday, I had to make the difficult decision to leave the trail and travel back home. Dr. Phil is still going on. It took me a good 2 - 3 hours to figure out how to connect back to a airport (LAX) from Big Bear city. Actually it wasn't too bad - I caught a 6:30 am Mountain Area Transit bus to San Bernadino, rtransferred to Metro Transit train to LA Union Station and transferred to a Shuttle bus to airport - arriving in time for a 12:45 pm flight home.

My plans for a 700 mile hike to Kennedy Meadows is gone this year. I hope to get a MRI on my shoulder next week to see what is going on with that - hoping I can get well (what ever that means) in time to at least do another large section hike - maybe in Sierra's in late summer - when snow, water, mosquitos, etc are gone.

Even though I am old enough (over 60) to have learned some leasons in life, this 3 week adventure did teach me (and remind me - forgotten) a number of things which made it worthwile:

1.) Experiencing the extremes in nature (cold, heat, thirst, wind, hunger, rain, etc) really makes you appreciate the finer things of life. When working as a Smokejumper in summers during college - we would come off fires after a week and marvel at how nice it was to use a normal rest room, etc.

2.) How important it is to give your body what it needs to sustain energy levels - and how it is impacted when you don't do so. I will definitely add big breakfast meals to future plans for these hikes - and eat dinner in afternoon when calories can be used - rather at night in bed (???...cold ground.

3.) Solar Technology just isn't there yet - I took two different solar chargers with me thinking at least one would do the job. Neither did the job and they addeed unneccessary weight.

4.) How good a "really cold beer" and large burger taste after 8 days of freeze dried food and water.

Hope to add more entries in summer and fall when I get back to PCT.
