Well, I guess I need to start somewhere, so this is my first entry. I will be hiking the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) this year (2011). Specifically, I will be doing a "thru-hike", 2,650 miles northbound from Mexico to Canada. I've done much reading and planning and now it is time to start implementing those plans in preparation for the start of this epic journey.
Let me start with a basic introduction. My name is Pfeiffer. I don't have a trail name yet, but I expect one will stick eventually along the way. I live in Palm Springs, CA and the PCT goes through the San Jacinto mountains just 10 miles west from where I live. Perhaps it is the proximity of the trail that has made me especially interested in it over the last few years. I am in my mid-40's and in fairly good shape physically. I am looking forward to being in the best shape of my life by the summer ahead. I work as an artist and summer is very slow so hopefully a few months away hiking won't hurt my business too much.
Each day, I try to tackle some small problem related to planning this trip. Today, for whatever reason, I decided to figure out this journal. I enjoyed reading 2010 journals on Postholer, so there was no doubt that I wanted to keep my journal here on Postholer. Keeping a journal is as much for friends and family as it is for myself. For me, it is a way to organize my thoughts. For friends and family, I hope this journal will allow you to partake in this adventure in some way - even if only from the comfort of your home. In fact, I hope you will look forward to "tuning-in" to read the latest entry as I go. I intend to write entries daily, and they will be posted on a week or so delay, such that a new entry will become available each day even if I fall behind on posting.
I will be discussing many aspects of my training and preparations in the following entries. Although winter has just begun, it looks like this may be a big snow year, so expect a good bit of discussion about that. This is primarily as test journal entry so I am going to cut it off here. More to follow, please bookmark this journal and read along over the next year!
